Privacy policy

The short version: your family tree never leaves your device. We only handle the small amount of information needed to sell you a download and, with measurement you can switch off at any time, to understand how people find us.

Last updated: October 9, 2026

This policy explains how TreeKeepsake ("we", "us"), operated by YOUR FULL NAME OR BUSINESS NAME, handles information when you use this website and the family tree editor. If anything is unclear, email hello@treekeepsake.com.

1. Your family tree data stays on your device

TreeKeepsake is designed so that we never receive your family's information:

  • Names, dates, places, relationships, titles, dedications and any GEDCOM file you import are processed entirely inside your web browser.
  • Your posters are drawn and your PDF and PNG files are generated on your device. They are never uploaded to us or to any third party.
  • Analytics and advertising measurement never include names, dates, places or file contents.

Because we never have a copy, we cannot see, recover or delete your projects for you. If you clear your browser data, use a private window or switch devices, projects saved in that browser are not available. Keep your original GEDCOM file or your own notes somewhere safe.

2. Information stored in your browser

The editor uses your browser's local storage (and similar technologies such as IndexedDB) to keep things working between visits. This information stays on your device:

  • your projects (the people you entered and your chart settings) and editor preferences;
  • your cookie and analytics choice, so we don't ask on every page;
  • after a purchase, a small unlock record (the payment provider, your order identifier and the date) so that downloads stay unlocked in that browser.

You can delete all of it at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser settings.

3. Purchases

Payments are handled by our payment provider through its hosted checkout page. You enter your payment details on the provider's page, not ours, and we never see or store your full card number. The provider processes your payment under its own privacy policy, which is shown on the checkout page.

From the payment provider we receive the information needed to run the business: your email address, your name if you give one, your country or billing region (for tax), the amount paid and an order identifier.

When you return from checkout, your browser sends the order identifier to our verification service, which asks the payment provider whether the payment succeeded and then unlocks downloads in your browser. No family data is involved in this step.

We use purchase information to deliver what you bought, to provide support and refunds, to prevent fraud and to keep the accounting and tax records the law requires.

4. Cookies, analytics and advertising

We advertise TreeKeepsake, for example with Google Ads, and we want to know which pages and ads are useful. For that we use measurement tools that may set cookies or similar identifiers, subject to your choices described below:

  • Google Analytics to understand visits in aggregate (pages viewed, the type of device, the approximate region);
  • Google Ads conversion tracking and, if enabled, Microsoft Advertising to learn whether an ad click led to a purchase.

The events we record are things like a page view, a click on a "Start your tree" button, the start of a checkout and a completed purchase with its value. They never include anything about your family.

When these tools are switched on, a banner asks for your choice on your first visit, and we pass that choice on through Google Consent Mode and Microsoft's consent mode:

  • In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, these services are told not to use cookies or advertising identifiers until you accept.
  • Everywhere else, measurement is on until you choose, and you can decline in the banner or at any time later. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as an opt-out of advertising cookies.
  • If you decline, these services are told not to use cookies or advertising identifiers. They may still receive limited, cookieless signals, such as the fact that a page was loaded, as described in Google's consent mode documentation.

You can change your choice at any time with the Cookie settings link at the bottom of every page.

Ads on our guides. Our free articles in the Guides section may show ads served by Google AdSense. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this and other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on visits to this site and other sites on the internet. You can opt out of personalized advertising in Google's Ads Settings, and learn more at How Google uses information from sites that use its services or opt out of some third-party vendors at aboutads.info. Ads are never shown on our home page or inside the editor.

5. Hosting and server logs

The website is delivered by our hosting provider. Like any website, it necessarily processes technical information such as your IP address, browser type and the pages requested, in order to deliver pages and to protect the service against abuse. These logs do not contain your family data, and we do not use them to identify you.

6. When you contact us

If you email us, we use your email address and message to reply and keep the conversation for as long as needed to help you and to keep a record of support requests. Please don't send us your GEDCOM file unless we ask for it, because it usually contains details about living people.

7. Who we share information with

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with service providers that help us run TreeKeepsake: our payment provider, our hosting provider, our email provider and, according to your cookie choices (section 4), the analytics and advertising services above. Each processes data under its own terms and privacy policy. We may also disclose information if the law requires it.

Some of these providers are based in, or process data in, the United States and other countries. Where required, transfers rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.

8. How long we keep information

  • Purchase records: for as long as tax and accounting law requires (often up to 7–10 years, depending on the country).
  • Support emails: up to 3 years after the conversation ends, unless you ask us to delete them sooner.
  • Analytics data: according to the retention settings of the analytics service, which we keep at the shortest practical period.
  • Information stored in your browser: until you delete it.

9. Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in the EU, the UK GDPR, or US state laws such as California's), you may have the right to access, correct, delete or receive a copy of your personal information, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise these rights, email hello@treekeepsake.com. We will respond within the time the law requires. You also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

You can opt out of analytics and advertising cookies at any time through Cookie settings. We treat that choice as your opt-out from any "sharing" of personal information for cross-context advertising.

10. Children

TreeKeepsake is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under 16 where local law sets a higher age). Family trees naturally include children's names, but that information stays on your device and is never sent to us.

11. Security

The site is served only over encrypted HTTPS connections, payments are handled by a specialized payment provider, and by design we hold very little personal information. No system is perfectly secure, but keeping your family data on your device means there is nothing of it on our side to lose.

12. Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle information, we will update this page and the "Last updated" date. If a change is significant, we will make it clear on the site.
